Democrats Deliver For Virginians While Youngkin Distracts From Vetoes

Government and Politics

April 8, 2024

DPVA Chairwoman Susan Swecker released the following statement after Governor Glenn Youngkin announced amendments to the bipartisan budget:

“Today, Glenn Youngkin announced 233 amendments to the bipartisan budget. While I am disappointed the governor wants to cut some of Democrats’ proposed funding, I am proud of Democrats’ dedication to continue to deliver for Virginians. As much as Glenn Youngkin will take the credit, it is only because of Democrats' rejection of the governor's modest initial proposals that public educators will finally get the 3 percent raise they need and deserve and our kids in K-12 schools will get increased funding over amounts included in Youngkin’s initial budget...

This should not distract from his record number of vetoes. His message of 'common ground' does not extend to increasing the minimum wage, giving hard-working Virginians paid family and medical leave, banning assault weapons, protecting abortion providers, lowering prescription drug costs, and prohibiting guns at public colleges and universities. These vetoes, as much as he will say that he is working across the aisle, prove that he only wants to advance his own agenda, and is out-of-touch with Virginians."
