Paul and Gloria Mathre have called The Buckingham senior living community home for the past eight years. While that may not seem like a long time to many folks, for a couple that has moved 30 times over their 60- year marriage, eight years is a lifetime!

Paul and Gloria first met as young college students attending Concordia College in Minnesota. Romance didn't follow until two years later as Paul left for seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Paul and Gloria would eventually reunite again when Paul spent two summers in Gloria's hometown teaching vacation bible school and helping the small congregation.  The following year, Paul went back every other weekend to conduct church services.

"What brought us together was our faith," said Paul. "God kept putting us in each other's lives for a reason. She was my soul mate and I didn't even know it."

Tragedy struck Gloria's family when her father became ill and had to spend time in a hospital in St. Paul. Paul would visit him regularly and it was at this time Gloria and Paul started to see one another in a more romantic light. That friendship that started years ago was now blossoming into romance.

"Seeing Paul care for my father made me realize how good of a man he was," stated Gloria. "We got off to a slow start but the past 60 years have proven he was worth the wait."

The couple married in August of 1954 and spent their newlywed years in South Dakota. When Paul graduated from seminary there was a need for military chaplains so he became an air force chaplain. He and his wife spent the next 20 years travelling around the world living on different air force bases. During this time, the couple had four children and now has six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Putting down roots at The Buckingham is one memory the couple says is special. Knowing they won't have to pack another box brings a big smile to their faces.

"Moving so many times over the years, they start to run together," laughed Paul. "Our friends changed from city to city, but our family unit is what remained constant. As long as we had each other, anywhere could feel like home."

When asked the question what is the secret to a long and happy marriage, one word resonated from both Paul and Gloria commitment.

"Honor the commitment you made to that person and welcome the commitment from the other person," said Paul. "Integrity is also very important. You can't live a lie and expect to have a successful marriage."
