New to us is the Youth Anime Club. This is for 8-11 year old youth and is led by volunteers Meadow Bulan and Jo Blanchette. Our teen volunteers are not babysitters. Those who join this club will be expected to be on good behavior and not be squabbling amongst themselves. There is the possibility of crafts and programs. The librarians will be overseeing. Children can be dropped off at 4:00 and picked up at 5:00. The library closes at 5:00 so please be on time.

Teen Anime club is for 12+ year old youth. There are no exceptions. This group meets every other Wednesday at 3:30 - 5:00. We are hoping to have crafts and programs for this one as well.

Story time Happens every Thursday at 11:00 am. Miss Jennifer eagerly awaits an audience. PARENTS- we are asking you what you would like to have a storytime. Snacks? Crafts? Please let us know.

Banned Book Club will be on September 28th and starts at 6:00pm. This month’s book is As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner.

We will be showing two movies in October! Stay tuned for what and when!

September 14th is Maker’s Night! 6:00-7:30. Bring your crafts to work on and chat with your neighbors!

Remember we will have take home crafts to hand out every week! Come get yours today.

Did you know that Banned Book Week is September 25th - October 1st? Here’s a little history on that. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. This includes the Island Trees School District v. Pico (1982) Supreme Court case which ruled that school officials can't ban books in libraries simply because of their content.

When was the first banned book?

1637

Amsterdam: Jacob Frederick Stam, 1637. The Brinley copy of the first edition of America's first banned book—"the most lively and entertaining account of early New England” (Kupperman)

When were books banned in history?

1929–62: Novels by Ernest Hemingway were banned in various parts of the world such as Italy, Ireland, and Germany (where they were burned by the Nazis). In California in 1960, The Sun Also Rises was banned from schools in San Jose and all of Hemingway's works were removed from Riverside school libraries.

What is the number 1 banned book?

For all time, the most frequently banned book is 1984 by George Orwell. (How very Orwellian!) The most banned and challenged book for 2020 was George by Alex Gino.

Why are books challenged?

the material was considered to be "sexually explicit"

the material contained "offensive language"

the materials was "unsuited to any age group"

We have games to take out and legos that children can play with while at the library! Come check out the toys in the children section.
