Dear Bekim,

Full transparency, this is a love letter – for a theater beloved by so many of us, a theater that works with dozens of theater makers every year, to create vital, provocative, and soul-nourishing work that connects us as humans in the world. 

Over the last decade plus since being introduced to EST, I’ve attended shows, readings, panels, and other events that have been transformative – that have shifted and deepened my understanding of how we live in this world. Charly Evon Simpson’s Behind the Sheet, Olivia Dufault’s Year of the Rooster, Carla Ching’s Fast Company, Leah Nanako Winkler’s Kentucky, to name a few.

I’ve met people, some who have become friends and collaborators, who have expanded my thinking and fundamentally altered my movement through the world. EST is a theater that has changed my life in meaningful ways. And I know this is a common experience for many folks who walk through EST’s doors.

This past spring I had the enormous privilege of working with the EST/Sloan Project on the world premiere of my play, what you are now, a co-production with The Civilians, directed by Steve Cosson. The production represented the culmination of years of development since its inception in 2014. Collaborating with Linsay, Graeme, and the EST staff through all of it was a tremendous gift – they were unfailingly supportive, and invested care in every step throughout the years-long process.

This kind of care and love for the work matters. EST is a rare home for storytelling, for theater makers, and for all of us who understand the necessity of theater being in, and shaping, our world.
