January 6, 2015From: Lloyd Library and Museum
It might be winter, but it's never too early to start thinking of summer and sand. Join us at the Lloyd this winter as we take you to the deserts of the east and the west.
View rare and unique volumes from the early 17th century to the present on cacti and succulents from the Lloyd's vast botanical book collection. We'll explore the earliest accounts of cacti, a new-world plant, including early medicinal uses. Plus, a look at how the cactus got its name (including the other names it had before Linnaeus stepped in), decorative uses, and the wide variety of cacti out there.
Then, we'll take you eastward as we explore the deserts of Saudi Arabia through the photographic eye of Joel Quimby, as he shares with us his visual documentation of time spent in the Middle East. It's the desert in a whole new light.
Two different deserts, two different worlds, one fascinating planet.
