Exhibition - Jan Nickum

Arts and Entertainment

July 23, 2015

From: 5th Street Gallery

Jan Nickum's work is based on animal life, primarily birds.Because birds are so abundant and common, they often go unnoticed, but as a artist she's intrigued by their immense range of patterns, textures, coloring and shapes.  Birds spend nearly their entire lives in the air, acting as messengers between the common and the ethereal- liaisons between the earth and the sky.

In her three-dimensional work, Jan loves the spontaneity of assembling found objects, especially those long forgotten then  rediscovered like an open-ended puzzle or an unsolved mystery.  In a tangible way she brings a second, but slightly altered, life to  the past.  These pieces have a dreamlike quality and, like dreams, their interpretation depends on the experiences of the viewer.
