In his second exhibition at the Athenaeum, long-time San Diego artist Jim Machacek is turning the gallery into a walk-in novel. You will step into the world of the Kincades, a fictional family that has lived in the Tidewater region of Virginia for three centuries. In a series of etchings, collages, artist books, installations, and created historical ephemera, Machacek has marshaled all his creative talent to bring the Kincades to life. A featured highlight of the exhibition will be The Kincade Chronicles…A Visual Novel, an editioned letterpress and digital artist book… a kind of “exhibition in a box” which contains all of the stories and selected artworks from the show.
Each gallery wall is a chapter in the novel where you will “read” the art as well as stories from Revolutionary War days to modern times, a blending of fact and fiction to illuminate and entertain. Actual historical events and cultural issues have been infused into the stories in order to heighten the Kincade reality. Guests can pick up a souvenir bookmark and follow a time line around the gallery visiting each generation.
Jim Machacek has been creating artworks in printmaking, artist books, collage, drawing and mixed media for over three decades. He holds a MFA from C.W. Post/Long Island University, a BFA from Boston Museum School of Fine Arts and a BA in journalism from Creighton University. He has lived in San Diego since 1984 and is currently teaching in the art department at San Diego Mesa College where he co-founded Mesa Arts Press to promote the art of letterpress printing in the production of artist books and prints. His artwork has been included in over 100 exhibitions in museums and galleries nationwide and in international exhibitions in Japan, Mexico, Canada and Hungary. His artist books are in special collections at the Library of Congress, the Tate Museum Research Centre in London, the New York City Public Library, and over 40 university libraries and 15 private collections in the U.S.
Machacek says The Kincade Chronicles has been a work in progress for many years: “I created them for an artist book I made in the mid 90’s and revisited them in subsequent years for more inspiration. However, looking back I might have invented them 36 years ago when I created my first paper quilt. I just didn’t give them a name. Given my predilection for storytelling, a fascination for history and indulging some compulsive need to combine fiction and reality, perhaps it was inevitable that the Kincades would unpack for an extended stay in my mind and tell their complete story.”
