From: Miller Gallery

It is with great pleasure that Miller Gallery announces the opening of its summer solo show featuring the art of Lamar Briggs (b.1935-2015). For this exhibition, the gallery will be showing part of Lamar’s Under the Sea series, shown for the first time. In addition, the gallery will also be showing other rare work, never before seen in Cincinnati. The show will run from June 22nd – August 12th, with an opening reception June 22nd from 6pm – 8pm.

The Lamar Briggs solo show has been meticulously curated with work highlighting certain stylistic points in the later part of artist’s career. The selection of abstract works on canvas stems from an examination of the artist’s relationship with negative space, color and line. His compositions create a lively rhythm throughout the gallery space, inviting the viewer to visually engage with his vibrant paintings.

Lamar Briggs

Lamar Briggs (b.1935-2015) was born in Lafayette, Louisiana and attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, the University of Houston and graduated from the Colorado Institute of Art, where he was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2005. Lamar’s painting style has evolved over the course of his long and successful career. In his earlier years, Lamar focused on landscape and still life subject matter, painting them in a contemporary realistic manner, not yet committing to complete abstraction. As his work evolved, he began to minimize his compositions, creating abstracted forms with line movement and color blocking.

Lamar’s work is internationally acclaimed and he has been listed in “Who’s Who in American Art” since 1962. Among the many honors he has received is the “Ford Foundation” award. In 1963, this award was juried by Alexander Calder, James Brooks and James Johnson Sweeney. Briggs was given the award at the Annual Houston Artists Exhibition, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas. In 1999, the Houston Chronicle Voted him number 5 of influential artists of the 20th century.
