From: Klompching GalleryWe are delighted to present a two-person exhibition, featuring new artworks by Krista Svalbonas and Dora Somosi. For both artists, the paper upon which they print their photographs, is not a mere substrate, but a core element of their respective projects.
What Remains is an ongoing series of artworks by Krista Svalbonas, whereby the artist the impact of architecture on human psychology, especially as it relates to ideas of home and dislocation. The artist depicts architectural structures in Lithuania and Latvia, built during the time of the Soviet occupation of the Baltic region.
Black and white photographs of these structures, have been juxtaposed with the laser-cut patterns of traditional Baltic textile design. The textile designs—laser-cut directly into the photographs—represent the power of folk art and craft, as well as the strength and determination of the women who created the weavings.
For the project, By Her Side, Dora Somosi has been visiting the homes/studios of influential historical female artists and thinkers. She creates a photographic blueprint, of a tree that was witness—through its proximity—to the chosen women’s legacy. The selected women all have deep relationships to nature and the landscape. They use their expertise or pioneering spirit for education and/or environmental appreciation. Visiting the sites where these women lived and worked stemmed from hikes with the artist’s daughter. It is a performative act that calls upon instinctive photographing to both connect and memorialize.
Both artists intervene in the construction of their artworks, using the labor of the hand to manipulate both image and the paper upon which it is reproduced.
