Edward Wolfley Painting Retrospective
A retrospective of masterful paintings by one of DAAP's Fine Art professors emeritus, this exhibition spans 40 years of work. The range begins in mid 20th century with landscape and figurative abstractions, which combine strong visual analysis and expressionistic vigor. The exhibit progresses through dynamic studies of natural and urban environments, bright watercolor and ink works exploring atmosphere, structure and space. In the 70's and 80's,all the components of Wolfley's paintings integrated and flowered into stunningly original, monumental works; Abstract Expressionistic responses to the vast and visually limitless horizons of the Great Lakes, revealing within their expanses the perfect geometries of the golden ratio and Fibonacci growth patterns. The balanced interlacing of tight geometrics and loose, expressive brushwork culminates in the 90's and new millennium. With influences from Persian miniature painting expanding the vocabulary of patterns, intensifying and stretching color harmonies, combined with breaking the boundaries of the picture plane in constructed framing devices that extend the images into three dimensions, the life work of this artist is fully realized.
