DOCUMENTARY ON 2011 MEMORIAL DAY DEATH OF RAYMOND ZACK TO SCREEN IN ALAMEDA, CITY WHERE EVENTS TOOK PLACE
Will the 30-minute screening at Alameda Point Auction House Theater heal, or re-open, city's wounds?
Alameda, Calif. - Media Alliance, a San Francisco based non-profit advocate for democratic communications, is sponsoring a screening of "Shallow Waters: The Public Death of Raymond Zack," a 30-minute documentary that examines the events of Memorial Day, 2011, when Alameda resident Zack entered the waters off the beach there, and drowned as first responders watched from shore. Public safety agency actions that day drew international media attention.
The filmmaker, Jaime Longhi, of Connecticut, will attend the event and facilitate a post-screening discussion with the audience.
Of the screening, Longhi said, "What seemed to me, at first, a tragically absurd news item from the other side of the country, became an all-consuming passion to understand how Raymond became an "object", and what the participants and witnesses of his drowning were thinking and feeling as events unfolded. I'm grateful to those citizens of Alameda who encouraged the making of SHALLOW WATERS by sharing so candidly their doubts and fears. It's only fitting that the first public screening, outside of a film festival, should be in Alameda."
Tracy Rosenberg, executive director for Media Alliance, said, "We're pleased to be able to facilitate screening of this thought-provoking film, which has earned accolades at festivals from coast-to-coast."
Commenting on a screening of the film last year at the Global Peace Film Festival, Michael McLeod, a professor at Rollins College, said, "If there is one thing I noticed about how people responded to this film, one question that stood out for everybody, it's this. We all -- every single one of us -- walked out of that documentary pondering the most important question of all that is posed by that incident: what would I have done? That includes me."
