FSPA has TWO very exciting opportunities this year to host out-of-town musicians. We need people interested in hosting these talented musicians while they stay in Flint to participate in various workshops and performances.

What does it mean to be a host?

- All homes and family structures are eligible to be hosts!

- Visitors are housed in pairs and stay 5-8 days. You do not need to speak German or French to host – all visitors are fluent in English.

- Hosts provide many of the meals for their guests, including packed lunches.

- Hosts provide transportation for their guests as one of their primary hosting duties. The guests will have unique and rigorous rehearsal and performance schedules.

- Host families support their guests through this exciting but stressful time.

- Host families provide cultural experiences for their guests.

Summer Show Auditions

The Rude Mechanicals

Freely adapted from William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream

Auditions: Wednesday, June 14, from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm in room 174

• Cold readings will be provided
• Guided improvisation activities will take place

Who can audition: Student's entering 6th grade - graduating seniors

Rehearsals: Mon-Fri starting July 17 - Aug11 (1 pm - 4 pm)

Performances: Aug 11 (2 pm & 7 pm) FIM's Outdoor Theatre

Show length: 60 mins.

Cast size: 10 actors and other possible technical positions

Synopsis: With scant allegiance to the work of Shakespeare, this play takes many liberties with Bard's text. In doing so, it achieves a comedy style of its own. Peter Quince, the carpenter, is out of work and in his idleness, persuades his friends, "the rude mechanicals," to compete for a prize the duke is offering for a play to be performed in honor of his wedding. The rude mechanicals snatch at the chance to recoup their failing fortunes. Manipulated by Puck, a playful sprite, Quince writes a play about Pyramus and Thisbe and recruits the rude mechanicals to perform in it.

If you haven’t heard already, we have some BIG NEWS this week at FIM! The 2023-24 Season has been announced and packages are now on sale! While you’re at it, grab some tickets to the last event in our 2022-23 season—the Flint Repertory Theatre’s production of Ragtime, which opens TONIGHT! The musical, a reimagined chamber production of the 1998 Tony Award-winning show, explores the American experience through the lens of three intersecting stories spanning across culture and social class. While the opening night show is sold outthe production runs through June 25, and this timeless musical is the perfect excuse to visit the intimate FIM Elgood Theatre.

We also continue our free FSPA/FSO Chamber Music Series tonight on the Lawn of MacArthur Recital Hall at FIM Dort Music Center. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the stirring duet of vocalist Lateena Martin and pianist Roger Jones, ready to sooth our souls with a summer evening serenade. 

Lastly, we need your help! At FIM we believe in the power of the arts to transform lives. Our connection to music, theatre, and dance is universal and has the power to unite us across language and culture. To demonstrate this in a literal sense, FIMFlint School of Performing Arts has arranged a number of cultural exchange experiences for young performers, and we need your help to make their experiences transformative in the most positive way. If you have the time, space, and inclination, please consider hosting youth from France this Summer or those from Germany in the Fall. Details are listed in the newsletter above and on the website. We guarantee you won’t regret the experience, and perhaps you’ll find yourself transformed in the process.
