The library will be closed on July 4th for Independence Day.

The dog days are the hot, sultry days of summer. In ancient astrology, they followed the star system Sirius, connected with heat, drought, and bad luck. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. In Egypt, it became known as a precursor to the annual Nile flooding and was worshipped as the goddess Sopdet. The "dog days" continues to be applied to the hottest days of the summer. It was proverbial among farmers that a dry growing season through the dog days was preferable to the trouble of a wet one.

Independence Day commemorates the Declaration of Independence, which was ratified by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. The Congress declared that the 13 Colonies were no longer subject to King George III, and were now united, free, and independent states, leading to the American Revolutionary War.
