National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a nonprofit organization that promotes creative writing around the world. Writing starts at 12:00 AM on November 1st and ends at 11:59:59 PM on November 30th. Novels must reach a minimum of 50,000 words in order to win. The aim is to get people to start writing, using the deadline as an incentive to put words to paper. Since 2006, nearly 400 NaNoWriMo novels have been published via traditional publishing houses and over 200 novels have been published by small presses or self-published.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) is observed on November 20th as a day to memorialize those who have been murdered due to transphobia. A TDoR memorial can include reading the names of those who lost their lives in the last year and may include candlelight vigils, church services, marches, art shows, and food drives. Rita Hester was a transgender Black woman who was murdered in November 1998. Grief and anger led to a candlelight vigil attended by about 250. The community struggled to see Rita's life and identity covered respectfully by local papers and it inspired the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and the TDoR. Scholars and activists highlight the importance of seeing transphobic violence as inherently connected to race, gender, and class, as reflected in the disproportionate violence against trans women of color.
