Glendale Public Library Insider for December 2022

LIBCON West 2022

The Glendale Public Library is proud to present its sixth annual comic convention in the heart of downtown Glendale, hosted by the Velma Teague Library in the surrounding Murphy Park. This free, all-ages celebration of all things pop culture on Saturday, December 3, from 1-6 PM will feature comic books, cosplay groupsdozens of vendorslive performances, games, prizes, and crafts for kids. Following the convention, participants are encouraged to experience the delicious restaurants, holiday shopping and festive lights in the downtown area.

Big Band Grandstand Holiday Concert
Enjoy a live performance of popular standards and holiday music at this special afternoon concert on Monday, December 5, from 1-3 PM at the Foothills Library!

Christmas with the Caribbean Cruisers

Come island-hopping at the Main Library in this tropical holiday musical experience on Saturday, December 10, from 2-4 PM. The Caribbean Cruisers combine traditional rhythms from Trinidad, Jamaica, and the Bahamas with your favorite Christmas songs and carols.

Glendale 100: Books & Blues Finale Concert

This three-band show featuring Tom Mein, Glenville Slim, and Geo Bowman & House Party will offer a mix of R&B standards and original material on Sunday, December 11, from 1-5 PM in the E. Lowell Rogers Amphitheatre in Murphy Park, located right outside the Velma Teague Library. 

Books & Blues, a series of performances by local blues legends, will entertain and expand your knowledge about an important genre of American roots music. 

Glendale 100: History of Christmas in Arizona

Singing Cowboy Gary Sprague and his (literal) horse Dusty will share Arizona history centered around the holiday and perform some sing-along favorites on. Monday, December 12, from 6:30-7:30 PM at the Main Library. Make sure you bring the family to this all-ages show!

Glendale 100: TeenVenture - Celebrate the 20s!

Come to the Heroes Regional Park Library on Sunday, December 4, from 1-2 PM to celebrate the 20s! Learn about local Art Deco buildings and make your own Deco Dream City! All materials will be provided. Ages 10-18.

Level Up! D&D @ Main: Character Creation

Want to get started in Dungeons & Dragons but don't know where to start? Have an idea for a cool new character but would like some help in the creation process? We're here for you! Bring your ideas to the Main Library on Monday, December 12, from 6-7 PM, and we'll walk you through the process of choosing character traits, using the Player's Handbook, and rolling the dice! For teens, ages 12-18.

Glendale 100: 1950s Sock Hop

Kids can celebrate the Nifty Fifties with activities, a craft, and dancing to some 50s hits on Thursday, December 8, from 4-5 PM at the Main Library. 

Getting Crafty with Miss Janet

Kids, ages 5-11, can create a cool craft to keep or give as a gift! Crafters younger than 6 years old will need an adult helper. On Monday, December 12, from 4-5 PM at the Velma Teague Library, Miss Janet will present a festive wreath holiday craft!

Arizona Broadway Theatre Presents: Fancy Nancy Splendiferous Christmas

After selling some of her old gowns and accessories, Nancy finally has enough money to buy a brand-new sparkly tree topper! When things don't turn out the way Nancy planned, will Christmas still be splendiferous? Find out at this holiday production from Arizona Broadway Theatre for Young Audiences, perfect for the whole family. 

You can catch this special performance on Friday, December 9, from 3-4 PM at the Foothills Library or Wednesday, December 14, from 2:30-3:30 PM at the Main Library.
