In 2022, Gov. Whitmer is making the largest investment in state roads and bridges in Michigan’s history 

Lansing, MI – On May 4th, Governor Whitmer announced that major road repair projects are expected to begin on Monday, May 9. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects include M-65 resurfacing in Alcona and Alpena Counties, and I-94/I-69 bridge maintenance in Port Huron in St. Clair County. Based on economic modeling, these projects are expected to directly and indirectly support over 60 jobs.  

“Across Michigan, we are fixing the damn roads to save motorists time and money. Investments like these in Alcona, Alpena, and St. Clair counties will help drivers go to work, drop their kids off at school, and run errands safely,” said?Governor Whitmer. “Since I took office through the end of this year, we will fix over 16,000 lane miles of road and 900 bridges, supporting nearly 89,000 jobs. We will have invested 70% more in our roads in four years than the previous four years. This year, thanks to my Rebuilding Michigan Plan and the recent, bipartisan Building Michigan Together Plan, Michiganders will see more orange barrels and cones than ever before as we move forward at record pace to fix roads and bridges across Michigan. We’re fixing our roads with the right mix and materials, so they stay fixed, without raising taxes by a cent. May 4th’s projects will improve ride quality, reduce congestion, and extend the service life of these critical roads.” 

M-65 resurfacing in Alpena and Alcona counties 

MDOT will invest nearly $5 million to resurface more than 27 miles of M-65 from the M-72 south junction to McCollum Lake Road, and from Van Wagoner Road to M-32 in Alcona and Alpena counties. 

Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 63 jobs.  

Eastbound I-94/I-69 bridge maintenance in Port Huron 

Staff at the MDOT Blue Water Bridge will complete bridge maintenance over the St. Clair River. This work will accommodate the installation of new tolling software and improving operations at the toll booths for eastbound traffic entering Canada.  

Rebuilding Michigan Plan 

Since Governor Whitmer took office, Michigan has?repaired, rebuilt, or replaced?13,198 lane miles of road and 903 bridges, supporting nearly 82,000 jobs. Recently, Governor Whitmer signed the?Building Michigan Together Plan, a bipartisan plan to invest nearly $5 billion in Michigan’s infrastructure, grow the economy, create jobs, and benefit families in every region of the state. The Building Michigan Together Plan calls for critical investments of $645 million in Michigan’s infrastructure, including $317 million for road and bridge programs, benefitting both state and local projects.
