Greenwich, CT -- Greenwich Democratic Town Committee (GDTC) released the following statement in response to the Republican Town Committee’s (RTC) false claims about Israel and Hamas:

“At a time when casualties from the Hamas attack on Israel have left over a thousand dead, and hundreds more injured or displaced, we are appalled that the Greenwich Republican Town Committee has exploited this unthinkable tragedy as an opportunity to boost their electoral prospects. Greenwich Democrats, many of whom have family in Israel, publicly condemned this act of terrorism by Hamas and reiterated our ongoing and unflinching support for Israel. Greenwich Democrats joined leaders across the country and within our town to unanimously condemn the attacks on our ally country of Israel, but the Greenwich Republicans seized the attacks to launch incendiary claims not against Hamas, but against the Democratic slate of candidates in Greenwich. Not only is the statement blatantly false; it is counterproductive to the urgent need to band together against the terrorists that attacked Israel, and flies in the face of the party’s proclaimed campaign theme of ‘unity.’

We call on First Selectman Fred Camillo, whose campaign made public promises of unity and to end the divisiveness, to disavow the deceitful and exploitative comments made by his own party.

This act is shameful and goes well beyond partisan politics or municipal elections this November. It also doesn’t represent the position of the majority of residents in Greenwich, including those in the traditional Republican party. In fact, it is this type of disinformation and divisiveness that sows the violence we’re disavowing.”
