Exhibition opens to the public
Swimming with Sharks: A Deep Dive into Shark Biology and Behavior
Saturday, November 12
Harvard Museum of Natural History, 26 Oxford Street

Nearly half a billion years ago, the first ancestors of a most remarkable group of fishes sprung forth from the evolutionary tree of life, exploding into a spectacular array of cartilaginous predators. Today, sharks are ubiquitous in and essential to our oceans, their lives intersecting with our own in important and surprising ways. In this remarkable exhibition, discover why the most massive sharks prey on some of the ocean’s smallest critters. Learn how to decipher dietary clues from jaws preserved in Harvard’s world-class collections. Explore how miniature teeth on shark skin help them move efficiently through water. Come to appreciate sharks not as deadly killers, but as fascinating creatures—more menaced than menacing—that play an outsize role in maintaining balance in marine ecosystems. Don’t miss this chance to come face-to-face with the ocean’s most famous, misunderstood megafauna!

In-Person Special Exhibit Event

RETIRE OR RESIST: THE PROS AND CONS OF WORKING LONGER

Are you planning on retiring early or late, and what factors will influence your decision?

Eventually all of us will face this huge decision; but is delaying retirement a realistic, practical and tenable option or should we re-consider working longer, in an attempt to be in better financial shape for retirement?

Many policymakers think it is logical – almost inevitable – that Americans will delay retirement and spend more years in the paid labor force. However, working longer is not a one-size fits all solution especially when one factors in economic and social inequalities, precarious working conditions, family caregiving responsibilities, poor health, and age discrimination. All of these make it difficult or impossible for many to consider working past the age of 65. Marginalized groups in particular face special challenges and yet, society’s legislative responses affect us all. Is there a way to find a path toward better working lives and improved retirement security for all Americans – and if so, what it is? Register on Zoom.

ALL ABOUT MEDICARE:
Info session and Q/A

Cambridge Forum is pleased to bring its first live/hybrid event to Cambridge Public Library on Tuesday, November 22 at 5 pm, to answer questions + concerns in a program, ALL ABOUT MEDICARE.

Despite the booklets and on-line information sessions available to the public, many people still find themselves confused and in need of personal advice about Medicare benefits.

This event is designed to provide some answers. AARP will begin by giving a brief overview of Medicare – what it is, what it does and does not provide for retirees. This will be followed by a slide presentation from Maureen Harty of Paine Senior Services, who will talk about the latest changes in Medicare provisions and the current period of open enrollment, which enables users to make changes to their coverage. There will be ample opportunity to ask questions in person or via Zoom.

Cambridge Forum records its free events for broadcast on the NPR network, for podcast and GBH Forum Network edits and uploads CF’s videos onto YouTube. CF is made possible by generous grants from Lowell Institute, Mass. Cultural Council, Cambridge Community Foundation and through generous public donations.

Please sign up now to attend this event live or to register on Zoom. There will be free refreshments provided before the event at 4.30 pm. All are welcome!

In Search of Thoreau’s Flowers: An Exploration of Change and Loss

In Search of Thoreau’s Flowers is an immersive experience inspired by Thoreau’s plant collection preserved in the Harvard University Herbaria. Open through November 2023

In-Person Special Event Thursday, November 17, 6 - 8pm
Panel Discussion: In Search of Thoreau’s Flowers
Geological Lecture Hall, 24 Oxford Street
Advance Registration Required
$10 members/ $15 nonmembers, free for Harvard ID holders

How can an imaginative fusion of art and science help us reach a meaningful understanding of the relationship between our actions, climate change, and diminishing biodiversity? This panel features the artists and scientists who collaborated in developing In Search of Thoreau’s Flowers. The inspiration for this project was a set of 648 plant specimens in the Harvard University Herbaria that were collected by Henry David Thoreau at Walden Pond. Utilizing photography, botanical data, and digital art, the exhibition explores and visualizes the richness of plant diversity in eastern Massachusetts and reflects on how climate change continues to impact this diversity.
A wine and cheese reception will follow in the museum galleries.
