UNDERSTORY EXHIBITION: ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Wendy Bale, Jamestown, New York
Understory: A Juried Selection of Art by Members of The Guild of American Papercutters

“Witnessing first-hand the fragility of the environment, I have become an advocate through my artwork for the local rivers and creeks and the creatures who inhabit them.”

Wendy Bale is a nature artist exploring cut paper sculpture. Her joy is in making new connections through the common bond of favorite natural subjects. Her inspirations are the local waterways and regions of Western New York and the flora and fauna found there. After leaving behind her career as a creative director and fashion catalog designer, she rekindled her personal art career in 2019. Now, with time and inspiration, a full-time art career has flourished.

Woodland Floor’,
Made in 2020, depicting the forest floor findings of moss, lichens, Christmas fern and a feather with a pygmy shrew. Inspired by a Christmas Day hike along Hatch Run in NW Pennsylvania.

GARDEN WISH LIST

HIGHFIELD HALL IS LOOKING FOR HELP IN FULFILLING OUR WISH LIST

Thanks to a generous donation this week, we are well on our way to improving our West Garden!

With future projects in the planning stages for the Sunken Garden, the immediate need here is to replace a tree form hydrangea that was damaged in a winter storm. Replacement of the same size will be difficult to find, but one of comparable size will run about $400.

The wish for the West Garden is to plant the two back beds to finish this space. Photos from the early 1900s show these beds to be unfinished--even back then! The plan here calls for 18 white paniculata hydrangea at $50 each, 2 Ilex Steeds at $300 each, and 6 Ilex Steeds at $200 each. The white hydrangea will be an excellent backdrop for our summer weddings and the upright Steeds Holly will add formality and great winter interest to this garden.

If you would like to help us fulfill this wish list please email us or call 508-495-1878 ext. 306.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK FROM KAY BENAROCH

FISH TACOS
adapted from recipe by Sam Sifton, New York Times

Fish tacos are a delicious and healthy meal to serve during late spring and summer. My mango salsa adds some sweetness and heat and is the perfect accompaniment for these delicious tacos. The recipe provides 2 to 3 tacos per person, but feel free to double it for a larger crowd!
