In a new op-ed in the Reno Gazette-Journal, the Executive Director of Nevada National Organization for Women Sue Burtch rebuked MAGA extremist Sam Brown for spreading dangerous misinformation about Question 6, the ballot measure to constitutionally protect reproductive freedom in Nevada’s constitution. Burtch made clear that Brown is a direct threat to Nevadans’ reproductive freedom and that he is willing to go so far as to lie to Nevada voters to push his extreme anti-abortion views.

Reno Gazette-Journal [OPINION]: Sam Brown is spreading falsehoods about Question 6, the abortion ballot initiative

- However, with the disastrous reversal of Roe v. Wade, a wave of abortion bans and restrictions has threatened women’s freedom in states across the country.
- Thankfully, Nevada is proudly a pro-choice state, and we are taking steps to protect reproductive freedom this year through the passage of Question 6 — a ballot initiative that would enshrine reproductive freedom in our state’s Constitution to help ensure access to abortion in our state.
- While some of Nevada’s officials — like U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen — were quick to announce support for the initiative and efforts to protect reproductive freedom, others, like Republican Senate candidate Sam Brown, have been spreading misinformation and lies about what the measure would do.
- Earlier this month, Sam Brown, who has consistently tried to evade questions on the issue, was caught on tape admitting that he would vote against the ballot measure to a room full of supporters and donors.
- He also peddled misinformation about Question 6 — claiming that the measure would put “essentially no limit on access to abortion” in a desperate attempt to build opposition to the measure through lies and falsehoods.
- PolitiFact, an independent fact checker, wrote that “legal and policy experts say Brown misstates what the constitutional amendment would do” and called his words outright “false.”
- Brown’s refusal to speak on this issue publicly but eagerness to lie about reproductive freedom in private — when he thought no one would catch him — should tell Nevadans all they need to know about his real intentions.
- Over the last decade, Brown has advocated for several anti-abortion policies, including pushing to overturn Roe v. Wade, supporting an abortion ban in Texas that was called one of the “toughest restrictions in the country,” and supporting abortion restrictions without exceptions for victims of rape or incest. Brown even said that his extreme anti-abortion views are “non-negotiable.”
- At my organization, the Nevada Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW), we work to protect women’s reproductive freedoms — the opposite of what Sam Brown has done throughout his political career.
- Nevadans have a clear choice between an anti-abortion politician who tried to hide his extreme views from us, and Sen. Jacky Rosen, who has consistently fought for our reproductive rights with a strong record of results.
