IFPDA Print Fair Fall 2022 - Kindred Spirits: Feininger, Tobey, Dorazio

From: Moeller Fine Art

We’re excited to feature a selection of fine works by three kindred spirits: Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956), Mark Tobey (1890–1976), and Piero Dorazio (1927–2005).

Feininger and Tobey were good friends. They met in 1944 at the Willard Gallery in New York and kept up a voluminous correspondence until Feininger’s death. They found conceptual sympathy in each other’s work, which deepened their friendship. “His highly sensitive technique captures something of the fleeting values of our life,” Feininger wrote of Tobey for a Portland Museum of Art exhibition catalogue in 1945. Tobey returned the compliment in 1954, in an essay for a Feininger exhibition catalogue published by the Curt Valentin Gallery: “[Feininger] does not abstract for abstraction’s sake. He draws the essence from the real, reshapes and relates in color, form and line - and gives us his world wherein, if we have the willing mind, and take the time, we are rewarded by becoming more aware, and more sensitive within ourselves.”

Dorazio, a central figure in the avant-garde, had a wide circle of artist friends and acquaintances, among them Giacomo Balla, Helen Frankenthaler, and Tobey. Committed to the primacy of color in painting, he embarked on a long series of works based on a subtle mesh of linear hues, woven and crosshatched into a dense unity. His work pulses with frenzied, luminous line and color, corralled into impeccably ordered compositions. Both he and Tobey explored allover painting, filling the surfaces of their work from edge to edge.

Achim Moeller Ltd., founded in London in June 1972, moved to New York in October of 1984 as Moeller Fine Art Ltd. The gallery specializes in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century masterworks, and regularly organizes museum-quality exhibitions, including “From Daumier to Matisse: French Master Drawings from the John C. Whitehead Collection,” “Howard Wise: Exploring the New,” and “Between Friends: Giacomo Balla + Piero Dorazio,” “Lyonel Feininger + Mark Tobey.” Moeller Fine Art is the foremost gallery in the United States for works by German Expressionists and the Masters of the Bauhaus.

For fifty years, Achim Moeller, the gallery’s principal, has helped build important and substantial private and public collections that are coherent in concept, period, and quality. Moeller Fine Art also assists individuals and institutions with collection management, insurance valuation, tax and estate planning, and auction representation.
