Non-profit IMPACT Northbrook and Scott Simpson Design + Build (SSDB) joined 501c3 Special Spaces designer Meg Meek (all of Northbrook) to create a dream room for a child in Lindenhurst undergoing treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia. On March 7, Westen’s bedroom was transformed into a space to escape the challenges of a family going through a difficult diagnosis and treatment. The room was transformed all in one day and was revealed to Westen when he returned home after nearly 50 days in the hospital.

Inspired by Westen’s imagination, Special Spaces teamed up with Scott Simpson Design + Build and IMPACT Northbrook who raised a majority of the money to fund this project to create a dream bedroom that reflects his spirit and personality. The combined team of contractors, designers, painters, sponsors and volunteers transformed the room into a imaginative space where Westen can find comfort and healing, escape his cares and just be a kid – all in just one day!

Westen’s new room was tailored to his love of the strategy game Friday Night at Freddy’s, Minecraft, building with Legos and his dream to be a YouTube Star.  The design team incorporated a 55-inch Samsung Smart TV (courtesy of Abt Electronics) along with a microphone mounted above a new desk with ample storage and building space for his Legos.  A new queen size platform bed and a pair of bookcases were added, with bedding and accessories to bring out the Freddy’s and Minecraft themes. Additional storage and display space to highlight all of Westen’s favorite toys, books and characters were also added. Accent and task lighting, a new ceiling fan, curtains, clothing and closet storage system contribute to the overall function of the room.

“Through every room makeover, Special Spaces acknowledges health is not merely the absence of disease but that it also includes physical and emotional health, stress management, and more, “says Kelly Knox, Illinois State Director, Special Spaces. “While children deal with the stressors that come with life threatening illness, we are able to offer our professional resources to encourage and support them as they go through the many challenges of treatment.”

“We are absolutely honored to have contributed to this project as we believe that in changing someone’s space, we can help to positively impact their life,” says Kathleen Henrikson, Scott Simpson Design+Build. “As with nearly every person we know, our team has experienced the lows of cancer diagnosis across the board, and it’s our deepest hope that through these personalized spaces, we are able to provide some healing for this special family.”

“This project is a great example of what IMPACT Northbrook was created for,” says Jenny Kenny, co-founder. “By partnering with different organizations, we aim to provide service opportunities that enrich the lives of all involved. When we heard of the work Special Spaces does, we knew it would be an opportunity to make an extraordinary impact, and we are excited to work on Westen's room, and help give him a special place to heal and grow.
