Jazz Concert - Mats Eilertsen Trio

Arts and Entertainment

February 7, 2013

From: Athenaeum Music And Arts Library

The series continues on February 13 with another Athenaeum debut by the Norwegian-Dutch Mats Eilertsen Trio, featuring Eilertsen on bass, Harmen Fraanje on piano, and Thomas Strønen on drums. The European jazz scene has been burgeoning since at least the 1970s, and nowhere more so than in the countries of Norway and the Netherlands, where a uniquely modern, abstract, yet at the same time lyrical free improvisational style has evolved. Mats Eilertsen, celebrated as one of Norway's top bass players, has gained international renown in the ensemble of pianist Tord Gustavsen, who has performed two memorable concerts at the Athenaeum. Eilertsen is joined in this trio by top Dutch jazz pianist Fraanje, who made a stunning Athenaeum debut in 2009 with trumpeter Eric Vloeimans. Norwegian drum master Thomas Strønen rounds out the ensemble, himself a leader on several CDs on the ECM Records label. All About Jazz wrote, "This trio comfortably blends European classicism with jazz's linguistic specificity...Fraanje's playing, stunning in its dark melodism juxtaposed with waves of paradoxically rounded angularity, is in a three-way conversation with Eilertsen, who blends robust, woody tone with flighty leaps into the upper register, and Strønen, who suggests time more often than playing it, coloring the music with dark, weighty cymbals and delicate movements around the kit."
