Jenna Valenta of Morris Catholic High School Takes First Place in NJ-11 Congressional Art Competition

Parsippany, NJ–– Representative Sherrill (NJ-11) announced yesterday the winners of her fifth annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students in New Jersey’s 11th District. 

“I am always proud of the level of artistic talent and self expression on display at our annual Congressional Art Competition reception. NJ-11 students from across the district have shown great skill and creativity in this year’s competition,” said Rep. Sherrill. “Thank you Montclair State for hosting our reception and judging the art again this year. Congratulations to Jenna, Finlay, and Hannah and well done to every student who participated!”

Submissions were reviewed and awardees were selected by a panel of Montclair State University faculty: 

Jesse Firestone, Curator and Exhibition Coordinator at Montclair State University Galleries

Alyssa Villasenor, Education and Outreach Coordinator at Montclair State University Galleries

Sally Morgan Lehman, Director/Founder of Morgan Lehman Gallery and Adjunct Faculty at Montclair State University

Sally Lehman and her students also organized and curated the gallery where all the art pieces hung for the reception.  

The following students earned distinction for their pieces:

First Place: Jenna Valenta, Morris Catholic High School, “Lips”

Second Place: Finlay La Londe, Millburn High School, “Untitled”

Third Place: Hannah He, Livingston High School, “A Leap of Faith”

Ms. Valenta’s piece, “Lips,” will be displayed in the US Capitol for the coming year alongside the winning pieces from every congressional district in the country.
