Protecting Our Mental Health: Some Buddhist Advice

A message from meditation teacher, Julie Francisco

Anxiety and depression are common sufferings in our modern society. Without a stable source of spiritual refuge or inner refuge to turn to for protection from suffering, it is understandably very upsetting for many people. Meditation practice can help alleviate these challenging feelings, for both Buddhists and non-Buddhists.

Many people experienced an increase in mental health challenges during the pandemic, and even people who had not previously suffered from ailments like anxiety or depression started to experience symptoms. People saw what it was like to have their ordinary objects of refuge and enjoyment taken away—work, time with family and friends, hobbies, vacations, restaurants, fitness and wellness classes, and so forth—during a time of great uncertainty and fear. Many people are still trying to make meaning out of their experience, particularly the more vulnerable like the sick or elderly.

While the main cause of any experience we have, including the mental experience of anxiety or depression, is the ripening of karma, the good news is that our painful states of mind are not permanent or fixed. These states are not who we are, and there is no such thing as an inherently anxious or depressed person. Negative karma can be purified and our mind can be healed. We can change our mental experience for the better, even in the face of unpleasant external circumstances.

Buddhist meditation and practice can improve mental health on a couple of different levels, depending on what each person is looking for. For someone mainly interested in simple meditation techniques for relaxation and improved well-being, there are basic meditations that can be highly beneficial. For someone interested in a deeper level of mental transformation, there are more extensive practices to purify the mind and attain a more profound experience of inner peace and bliss. In other words, there is something for everyone.

In our upcoming Tuesday evening series, “Finding Freedom From Anxiety Through Buddhist Meditation” people will learn time-tested meditation techniques and Buddhist advice that they can apply to their daily lives in a practical way. These techniques & advice have been passed down in an unbroken lineage from Buddha Shakyamuni. The meditations we'll focus on in this series are particularly helpful for drawing out the true potential for mental peace and happiness that each of us carries inside our mind, deep down under the busyness, worry, and distraction that we are currently experiencing. Everyone can be happy and free from anxiety.
