Project Access Covid Tests (ACT)

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has partnered with Project Access Covid Tests to offer free at-home COVID-19 tests directly to Kansans in vulnerable communities. Visit accesscovidtests.org and enter your zip code on the home page to see if free rapid, at-home COVID-19 test kits are available in your area.  

If you are eligible, you can order a box of five free tests which will be delivered within 1-2 weeks. Kansans who need help with ordering may call 1-866-534-3463 or visit the frequently asked questions (FAQ) page at accesscovidtests.org/faq.  

ODEP News Brief -- June 3, 2022

Pride Month

During June, the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) is pleased to honor Pride month and celebrate the many and diverse contributions of LGBTQI+ Americans with disabilities. "This month and every month, we in ODEP are committed to ensuring people with disabilities, including those from the LGBTQI+ community, have equal access and opportunity to set and achieve their goals for employment," said ODEP Assistant Secretary Taryn M. Williams. "We want all workers, from all backgrounds, to take pride in who they are, celebrate their different identities, and thrive as members of our nation's workforce and communities."

Building Mental Health-Friendly Workplaces

The U.S. Department of Labor held a virtual event on "Building Mental Health-Friendly Workplaces" in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month in May. The event focused on the department's commitment to promoting mental health-friendly workplaces and ensuring America's workers can access the equitable and inclusive mental health services they need. It featured insightful dialogues and knowledge sharing that explored mental health parity, the role of the workplace in addressing the nation's mental health crisis, and strategies for fostering work environments that support workers with mental health conditions. Speakers included U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor Julie Su, Office of Disability Employment Policy Assistant Secretary Taryn Williams, and Employee Benefits Security Administration Acting Assistant Secretary Ali Khawar.

Digital Accessibility and the Americans with Disabilities Act

The Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology published a new article, "DOJ Affirms the ADA Applies to Digital Accessibility." The article points to PEAT resources that provide insight into the acceptable methods that the U.S. Department of Justice has specified to implement digital accessibility.

Strategies for Expanding Disability-Inclusive Apprenticeships

The Council of State Governments and the State Exchange on Employment & Disability published a new policy curriculum on inclusive apprenticeships. The online resource outlines state strategies for skill development and job exploration opportunities for individuals with disabilities through work-based learning programs such as apprenticeships. The curriculum also features a variety of state policy examples and resources to help make apprenticeship programs more inclusive of people with disabilities.

Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Workers Webinar

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Council of State Governments and its regional affiliate, CSG East, hosted a webinar on "Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Workers." The webinar, developed in collaboration with the State Exchange on Employment & Disability, explored how state policymakers can support both employers and employees by advancing access to mental health services and supports. In addition, the webinar highlighted how state policymakers can address workforce shortages and help shape the modern workplace to better meet the needs of the American worker.
