A Celtic Roots Journey With Kalos

Jeremiah McLane, accordion/piano
Joanna Hyde, fiddle/vocals
Eric McDonald, guitar/mandolin

Sun. | September 24th
@ 7:30 PM

Kalos is a Celtic Roots Trio that takes listeners through a range of moods — from poignant yearning to exuberant celebration. “Headland” (the title of their debut album) refers to a point where land meets sea, and is a fitting analogy for the exploratory space Kalos inhabits — one that calls forth driving, heartfelt music journeying through unknown territory to seek and find its essence – the enduring, resilient experience of the human heart. Join us for an intimate concert that explores folk traditions and new compositions from the Celtic world and beyond with three musicians full of good humor and energy for creating together, and sharing their craft on stage.

Two Performances!
Fri. | September 29th
@ 7:00 PM & 9:15 PM

Kerrytown Concert House is thrilled to welcome back to its stage Preservation Hall Legend – clarinetist, saxophonist, and flutist Charlie Gabriel! A fourth-generation jazz musician from New Orleans, Gabriel has strong ties to Detroit where he moved as a teenager, and to Kerrytown Concert House where in 1994, he recorded his award-winning CD Live at the Kerrytown Concert House with jazz pianist Red Richards. He came back to KCH again with Richards in 1997 to collaborate in a tribute to Doc Cheatham with Marcus Belgrave and Kurt Krahnke. Now on the heels of his 91st birthday, Gabriel returns for a reunion performance with former bandmates Paul Keller & Pete Siers, and for an especially meaningful collaboration with Marcus Belgrave’s son and multi-woodwind-instrumentalist Kasan Belgrave. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear this elder statesman of Preservation Hall and New Orleans jazz play at KCH – up close and personal!

Third Coast Swing has been playing the music of The late Belgium born Romani Gypsy, Django Reinhardt & his band, The Hot Club Of Paris (1930s-1940s) — think Louis Armstrong with a French accent. Third Coast Swing has changed it up a bit and is currently touring with the Detroit native Dave Bennett, violinist Grant Flick, vocalist Ella Jury Jarvis, and pianist Andrew Henley. Jury Jarvis and guitarist Kaedin Plummer did a deep dive on early jazz classics by Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billy Holiday, then arranged these songs to fit Third Coast Swing’s eclectic style. Third Coast Swing has performed with national touring acts such as Frank Vignola, Denis Chang, Jimmy Grant, Dave Bennett, The Midwest Gypsy Jazz Fest in Madison, Wisconsin. Third Coast Swing has performed regionally at The West Michigan Jazz Society, The Ludington Amphitheater, The Ludington Area Center for the Arts, Bell’s Eccentric Café (Kalamazoo), Detroit Jazz Society, Crooked Tree Art’s Center, Kerrytown Concert House, The Playhouse at Whitelake Ramsdell Theater, Westshore Performing Arts and more.
