My figurative work is about psychological presence that emerges and the narrative it tells—shown through an expression, gesture, gaze, or the relationship between figures.

The work often takes on its own life, creating a fictional story or a narrative of the actual model. I am not looking so much for a likeness, or a physical portrayal of the model; but rather the undercurrent of the life or fictional story. Going beyond likeness to psychological impact. I’m interested in the emotional relationships between people and the structural form of their figures.

The paintings are also about color. I am often compelled to use intense colors and color relationships that I feel viscerally. I use whatever medium has the color or texture that I need.

This work is about people with hopes, dreams, fears, relationships and life stories told and yet to be told. Everyone has many stories that are lost with their passing. For me, the portraits tell some of those stories.

I’m interested in conveying an undercurrent of mystery and metaphor for what I’m experiencing at the time.

The interiors of my house were painted as a response to the restrictions and confinement of the pandemic. The water paintings are my deep interest in light reflections. I was also inspired by by the environments of Tangier, Morocco, Venice, Sicily and what I’m experiencing at the time.

I use the direct painting method in oils and acrylics. I also use classical methods including transparencies to capture movement in water. At the same time I like working on the edges of abstraction. I use color and texture to communicate mood.

The landscape of Michigan has been my subject matter for the past few years. I love looking at the lay of the land and its changing colors, textures, and vistas through the seasons. The use of oil paint allows for mixing and layering that accommodates a more instinctual and subtle way of working and allows for the unexpected to happen.

Painting landscapes allows me to create art that can reflect and define space, color, form, and line with the only constraint being the natural world itself. My aim is to allow the viewer to stand in the spaces I have created and reflect on their own sense of place.
