Hemingway in Spain Series, Papa's Pilar Rum Dinner
ERNEST HEMINGWAY in SPAIN
A year after the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Hemingway left for Spain to cover the conflict for the American Newspaper Alliance. During his coverage of the war, he traveled with a fellow reporter named Martha Gellhorn. The two had first met in Key West and became close during their time in Spain. The two would later marry in 1940, after Hemingway’s marriage with Pauline ended.
Hemingway’s link to Spain is probably best remembered as one of bullfights and matadors.

Osborne Tasting - Brandy, Sherry & Vermouth Lunch
Osborne - 1775
FROM THE END OF THE 18TH CENTURY
HISTORY
The history of Osborne goes back to the end of the 18th Century, when a young English merchant, who went by the name of Thomas Osborne Mann, arrived in the Cádiz region to sell wines from the area. He soon began to do business in Puerto de Santa María, and this is where he acquired various wineries that he would later bring together under one brand: Osborne. Its long and successful track record of almost 250 years, have made Osborne into the great business group that it is today, enjoying international fame and recognition.

Joan Miró - The Harlequin's Carnival - Kick off
Joan Miró i Ferrà - Barcelona - April 20, 1893
When Miro moved into the studio of Pau Gargallo on the rue Blomet in Paris, he came in contact with the poets and artists belonging to a group that had arisen from Dadaism. In 1924, this became the Surrealist group centered on the poet Andre Breton. Miro was never an orthodox Surrealist. However, the movement legitimized the use of dreams and the subconscious as artistic raw material. It thus offered him the possibility of liberating his own pictorial style by allowing him freely to combine the earthly and the magical elements seen in his "detailist" period.
Harlequin's Carnival is good example of this change. The world of the imagination and subconscious, rather than being an end in itself, was for Miro a way of giving shape in his paintings to his lived experiences and his memories.
Harlequin's Carnival is seen by art critics as an account of the human subconscious mind.
It is considered the highest point in Miro's personal surrealist style. Along with Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali, Harlequin's Carnival has become the most iconic image of the Surrealism Movement.

Thursday Calatrava Lunch
Calatrava's Ysios Wine Lunch
Bodegas Ysios winery in Laguardia, Spain (1998–2001)
Santiago Calatrava Valls - July 28 1951 - Benimàmet
is a Spanish architect, structural engineer, sculptor and painter, particularly known for his bridges supported by single leaning pylons, and his railway stations, stadiums, and museums, whose sculptural forms often resemble living organisms.
The Bodegas Ysios winery in Laguardia, Spain (1998–2001) was designed as a symbol of the
Rioja wines made by that winery.
Built on a sloping site surrounded by vineyards, the 196-metre (643 ft) long building has an aluminum roof and a facade covered with laminated wood panels,
alternating between convex and concave,
with a roofline that ripples like a series of waves.

Walking with Sam on the Camino de Santiago
Walking with Sam: A Father, a Son, and Five Hundred Miles Across Spain
AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
An intimate, funny, and poignant travel memoir following New York Times bestselling author and actor Andrew McCarthy as he walks the Camino de Santiago with his son Sam.
When Andrew McCarthy's eldest son began to take his first steps into adulthood, McCarthy found himself wishing time would slow down. Looking to create a more meaningful connection with Sam before he fled the nest, as well as recreate his own life-altering journey decades before, McCarthy decided the two of them should set out on a trek like few others: 500 miles across Spain's Camino de Santiago.
Over the course of the journey, the pair traversed an unforgiving landscape, having more honest conversations in five weeks than they'd had in the preceding two decades. Discussions of divorce, the trauma of school, McCarthy's difficult relationship with his own father, fame, and Flaming Hot Cheetos threatened to either derail their relationship or cement it. Walking With Sam captures this intimate, candid and hopeful expedition as the father son duo travel across the country and towards one another.

Bahama Bob, Key West Rum Maker & Innovation Consultant
The prolonged contact of the rum with the sherry-soaked wood in the barrel imparts it with unique flavor and depth, making it a fast favorite of rum aficionados who thirst for something out of the ordinary.
What is cooperage in winemaking?
Cooperage is not merely a flavoring component in wine but is also a key player in sculpting a wine via lees contact and oxygenation, even when adding no flavor. Thus, the type and thickness of wood and size of vessel is also quite important.
Learn from the experts while you sip a sherry cask rum cocktail created specially for you, by Papa's expert mixologist Jordan Hughes.
Do not worry, we have some delicious wine to go with your lunch

Antoni Gaudí Bodegas Güell Grand Tasting
Modernisme Vernacular Architecture- 1895
Antoni Gaudí - Reus - June, 25 1852
This collection of Modernista buildings includes a cellar, a house and a chapel. It was built towards the end of the nineteenth century, commissioned by industrialist Eusebi Güell who owned a number of vineyards in the Garraf area.
There had been controversy surrounding the authorship of this group of buildings. On the one hand it had been suggested that Francesc Berenguer i Mestres,
a disciple of Antoni Gaudí was responsible for the design and on the other hand that it was a project created by Gaudí himself.
The original plan is kept in the Sitges Historical Archive (located in the building adjacent to the Santiago Rusiñol library). It is signed by Antonio Gaudí and thus put an end to the controversy.
The buildings are asymmetric and make many references to medieval structures. The parabolic arches are remarkable as too are the wrought iron and brickwork.
The cellar is currently managed as a restaurant.

Diego Velázquez ~ Old Woman Cooking Eggs 1618
Baroque
Diego Velázquez - Seville - June 6, 1599
Before Diego Velázquez made it big as the court painter to King Philip IV, he painted bodegons. Derived from the word bodega, meaning tavern, bodegon paintings are a class of genre paintings that feature still-life kitchen elements.
His contemporaries criticized his choice in subject as still-life paintings were regarded as the lowest on the hierarchy of tastes as the everyday objects were seen as unworthy.
In response, he stated, "I would rather be the first painter of common things,
than second in higher art."
Why Spanish Brunch
In Spain the days are filled with seemingly endless string of meals, small and large,
Brunch is a new concept. On weekends, and the countries metropolises,
like Madrid, Barcelona & Seville, particularly hotel restaurants, it has been gaining traction.
Brunchalona has even emerged as a Social Media.
Brunch is 100% not a Spanish tradition. But we are after all still in Key West!
