The annual Las Vegas Science and Technology Festival has quickly become one of the largest educational events in Nevada. The Festival draws thousands of participants over nine jam-packed days of FREE events all across the Las Vegas Valley. Through engaging and educational programming, the Festival strives to spark curiosity and highlight the amazing science, technology, engineering, and math taking place right here in our community. The Festival makes science fun, accessible, and engaging for everyone - kids, families and adults. With over 100 organizations participating, there is something for everyone!

April 28, 2023

9:00 AM-11:00 AM: Rebel Science Explorers

Calling all future scientists! Join us at UNLV for a hands-on science project and learn alongside real UNLV graduate students and professors. Build and test your own Lunar rover, learn about UNLV programs, and more!

We will also offer optional UNLV campus tours and presentations for parents during the event as well as an optional tour for all after the event.

1:00 PM-2:00 PM: BlackFire Innovation Tour

Do you want to see emerging technologies in gaming, hospitality, and tech? Do you want to learn about resources like the Makerspace and RebelForge, and see how UNLV is promoting economic development in Southern Nevada? Black Fire Innovation houses all of it and YOU can go on a tour of Black Fire Innovation to see it for yourself!

BlackFire Innovation is an innovation hub aiming to facilitate strategic partnerships and drive innovation in hospitality and gaming. Along with a floor dedicated to showcasing new technologies, BlackFire Innovation also houses RebelForge, the UNLV Office of Economic Development, CoOperate (a co-working space), and a Makerspace.

4:30 PM-6:00 PM: My Journey to Medicine: Public Talk with Dr. Hernandez

Have you dreamed of being a doctor? Join us for a public talk with Dr. Hernandez, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Education at the UNLV School of Medicine. Dr Hernandez will share his journey to becoming a doctor and provide important tips for those interested in pursuing a career in medicine. He will alsobriefly discuss the steps you need to take in order to be considered for medical school. If you see yourself as a future doctor or medical professional, this event is for you!

Calling all the junior paleontologists for a sneak peek at the Ice Age Fossils State Park, not yet open to the public! Join us for an interactive hiking experience where we will explore the plants and animals that call the desert home. Learn about ancient creatures and the science of paleontology.

Visit science stations to learn about the plant and animal species of Wetlands Park and southern Nevada, and get help identifying them! Join us as to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day and participate in fun games and activities.

10:00 AM-12:30 PM: Base Camp Family Day

Join the LVAC BSA Base Camp, Get Outdoors Nevada, and Nevada Department of Wildlife for an awesome hike and fishing event at Sunset Park! Go on a guided hike, try shore fishing, and help clean up our local park. Bring plenty of water and sun protection.

11:00 AM: SMARTe Garden Experience

SMART Garden Projects and Walk

Organized by SMARTe World Micro-Schools and Saint Miguel Community Garden, join us for an opportunity to walk and participate in gardening experiences where we will use our five senses, experiment, and plant!

Go on a behind the scenes tour and see the daily life of the biologists who rely on biology, chemistry and technology to keep our 2,000+ fish happy and healthy.

Come see the only simulated underground gold mine in the state! Explore the grounds and exhibits at the Mine Experience, aka the “Jewel of the Desert.” You will learn about the history of mining and the importance of mining in Nevada.

9:30 AM-11:00 AM: Hoover Dam Rafting Adventures

Come enjoy the spectacular Hoover Dam views from the Colorado River. From the Alan Bible Visitor Center you are transported down the historic Lower Portal Road to the Black Canyon Water Trail of the Colorado River. There, you will board your raft for a 30-minute ride.

Two great offerings at one amazing location! Join Springs Preserve naturalists for a presentation on the Nature Exchange. Join us and explore Sharks in the Desert!. What does it take to operate a 1.30 million gallon aquarium filled with sea life in the middle of the Mojave Desert? Go on a behind the scenes tour to discover the science that makes it possible.

The Atomic Museum will be offering two docent-led tours. The AM's docents are Cold War Veterans, most of whom worked at the Nevada Test Site, and will share personal stories about their experiences. Plus, hands-on STEM activities will be presented in the lobby!

Come see the latest innovations in surgical care thanks to robots! Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center invites you for an interactive experience to explore the latest surgical robots, get hands-on demonstrations and learn how science is used every day in the hospital. Plus, younger kids can participate in our teddy bear clinic learning to perform ‘surgery' and care for their stuffed animals.

12:00 PM-3:00 PM: Code Like a Pro!

Code Central invites you to learn programming like the professionals! Guests can drop in anytime from 12pm to 3pm and develop a video game, design a website, or learn to build circuits. Stay the full three hours and make all three projects, or just stick around long enough to make one! All participants who come to our event will be entered for a chance to win a free month of coding to continue their educational journey in Computer Science!

Join the CSN Planetarium and the Las Vegas Astronomical Society for a fun-filled night of space science and STEM activities! There will be three planetarium shows to choose from - one kids show at 6pm followed by two different general audience shows at 7pm and 8pm. Throughout the event, you can explore hands-on STEM space activities for all ages in the Laxalt Center (adjoining the planetarium) as well as telescope observations outdoors with the Las Vegas Astronomical Society.
