Long Beach High School students Laura Capozzi and Meagan Miciotta received honorable mention in the American Association of Teachers of Italian Long Island Italian Poetry Contest at SUNY Old Westbury. Victoria Epstein, Monica Lee, Lauren Mangiafreno and Liana Merdinger, who also competed, received certificates of participation. For the contest, students memorized Italian poems that were assigned to them by the AATI. They competed against students from all over Nassau and Suffolk counties. The six students prepared for the competition under the direction of Italian teacher Anna Carfagno.
The AATI is a national organization dedicated to excellence in teaching and research in all areas of Italian. The organization was founded in 1924 to promote the study of Italian language, literature and culture in schools, colleges and universities in North America.
