League members and supporters, sign up for the League of Women Voters of Berkeley, Albany, Emeryville’s Fall Meeting/Webinar that will take place 6:30- 8 PM, THIS THURSDAY, October 26th over Zoom. We are pleased to announce our featured guests that will include Alameda County Assessor Phong La, Alameda County Treasurer Hank Levy, and Berkeley City Auditor Jenny Wong. All will discuss their work to identify and/or address challenges that must be proactively managed to keep our needed public and community services as healthy and responsive as possible. See more!

PROTECT CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURE PROGRAMS IN THE FARM BILL

The League of Women Voters of the United States has joined nearly 650 other organizations in a letter to congressional agriculture committee leadership, urging them to protect the $20 billion investment in climate-smart agriculture and conservation technical assistance, funded by the Inflation Reduction Act, and to maintain it in the 2023 Farm Bill. POLICE ACCOUNTABILITY BOARD REVIEWS PUBLIC SAFETY NEWS & COMPLAINT

Berkeley Police Chief Jennifer Louis made the Board aware of three incidents since the Board last met. Two of these incidents were carjackings that had occurred in previous months, one of which included a violent assault on the vehicle’s owner. As of October, suspects in both cases had   been apprehended and arrested. The third was an armed robbery that occurred on the 1st of October. While apprehending the suspect the police uncovered a “ghost gun,” a type of untraceable firearm.

Louis then transitioned to address the issue of escalated tensions and potential hate crimes, specific to the Israeli-Hamas conflict. See more!
