Instead of meeting for its usual worship service on Sunday, Sept. 6, one Cincinnati church plans to shut its doors and send its people back into the community to pull weeds, wash windows, serve meals and more.

Connect Christian Church normally meets at the Eastgate Holiday Inn on Sunday mornings, but this week, instead of a normal worship service, more than 100 adults and kids from the church will be spending the day serving the community.

The church is planning a massive Serving Day this Labor Day weekend in which everyone who attends will be expected to roll up their sleeves and go to work literally all over town.

"As follower of Jesus, sometimes the last thing we need to do is sit and listen to one more Bible study or sing one more Christian song," said Connect's Senior Pastor Mike Edmisten. "We're called to model the love of Jesus, and we're never more like Jesus than when we serve."

Edmisten points out that Connect's Serving Day isn't all that radical for the church considering one of the expectations for becoming a partner at the church is a commitment to "serve selflessly."

"We don¹t believe in membership at Connect," he said. "We think partnership is more healthy because members have rights and partners have responsibilities."

The church will rally the work party at Batavia Township Park (1535 Clough Pike) at 8:30 a.m. for coffee and donuts followed by a 20-minute service at 9 a.m. By 10 a.m., everyone should be in place at one of seven work sites.

Some of the locations they¹ll be heading to include The Ronald McDonald House downtown, A Caring Place Pregnancy Center in Mt Carmel, The Batavia Christian Help Center, and various homes of elderly people who need a hand with yard and house work.

"When the church began over 2,000 years ago, it wasn¹t known for what it was against it was known for what is was for," said Jay Hess, a member of Connect¹s leadership team. "And loving and serving our community is one thing that Connect wants to be known for."

Connect Christian Church is a portable church that normally meets at the Holiday Inn Eastgate Ohio on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Visit
