Join us for the first event of LA Get Down 2024 - a yearly month long celebration of hip hop and spoken word. This opening evening is an open mic Hip Hop Cipher hosted by M-cray and Dj Donkingski, come GET DOWN on the Greenway stage!

Honoring the late Gil Scott Heron

In honor of the legendary late Gil Scott-Heron, we're holding the first annual LA Get Down: Wordsmith Achievement Award ceremony. There will be performances of poetry and hip hop, hosted by Maxi Payne - Hip Hop artist.

With special guest Guest Gia Scott-Heron (Bluesology),  Gil Scott Heron's daughter. Featuring two World Stage Press poets - James Coates and Ron L. Dowell.

8 pm: From Rufio to Zuko Workshop + Welcoming Ceremony

A workshop performance of a portion of Dante Basco's new solo show: From Rufio to Zuko. The piece is an intimate look at the journey behind some of pop culture's most beloved characters and a deeper glimpse into the person we all feel like we know.  

Dante Basco is an actor, writer, poet, producer & director, whose career has spanned nearly 4 decades in Hollywood. Not only does he have iconic roles on his resume like Rufio in Steven Spielberg’s “Hook” and Prince Zuko in the highly acclaimed, “Avatar the Last Airbender,” he’s also been a strong voice in the Asian American arts community.

Celebrate the Year of the Dragon with Feng Shui Poetry, a form created by Jen Cheng as a new way to write poetry inspired by Feng Shui principles. The five elements—Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, Wood—are a way to meditate on your message. You’ll get 6 writing prompts and leave with new perspectives on writing poetry. No experience needed. Come with curiosity.

Trans, nonbinary and other gender-nonconforming folks of all ages and experience levels are invited to this two-part workshop for Writing and Performing Your Own Story. No experience is necessary, only an interest in getting authentic T/GNC stories out into the world!
