Safe housing is a necessity for every resident of the Commonwealth and vital for healthy communities. The Department of Public Health’s Community Sanitation Program (CSP) has amended its housing code regulations, 105 CMR 410.000, to promote healthy living conditions, including specific requirements on pest management and mold caused by excess moisture, as well as flexibility for local boards of health to address emergent issues, including climate change variability.

Changes to the Housing Code were approved by the Public Health Council after two public comment periods, which included significant feedback from local health, landlord and tenant groups, and advocacy organizations. DPH is delaying the effective date of these Housing Code amendments for 6 months, until April 2023, to give sufficient time to prepare for the changes.

If you rent out a room, unit, apartment, single family home, or own a multi-family home, please click on the housing code changes. There are many owner and tenant responsibilities.
