New from Arcadia Publishing's popular Images of America series is Southern Colorado: O.T. Davis Collection by local author Mike Butler. This will be Butler's third book with Arcadia Publishing completing his Southern Colorado Trilogy. This pictorial history boasts more than 200 vintage images and provides readers with a unique opportunity to reconnect with the history that shaped their communities.
While the first two books (Around The Spanish Peaks and Great Sand Dunes National Park) had a few Davis photos in them, the third book is entirely devoted to Davis's photographs of railroads, mining, and agriculture in southern Colorado. Butler found that the source of the O.T. Davis photographs was a collection housed in the museum of the Monte Vista Historical Society in Monte Vista, Colorado. He partnered with the Historical Society in publishing the Davis photographs. "Davis's photographs are a very vivid historical record of southern Colorado during its pioneer years after Colorado became a state in 1876," Butler stated.
The photographs of O.T. Davis are an invaluable historical record of the development of the southern Colorado frontier. No other photographer produced as many photographs of the area. He captured scenes from early-day Walsenburg and La Veta; followed the D&RG Railroad over La Veta Pass and Cumbres Pass; photographed mines in the San Juan Mountains; traveled with road builders on Wolf Creek Pass in 1916; and recorded scenes of towns across the San Luis Valley. As the Denver Post once stated, "History comes alive in his photos."
