Metacare Inc. Hosts a Children's Pet Story Contest in Celebration of National Pet Month

Arts and Entertainment

May 3, 2013

Metamora, MI - In celebration of National Pet Month during the month of May, Metacare Inc. is hosting a children's Pet Story Contest. The contest is open to children between the ages of 5 and 15 in and around the Metamora community. Metacare Inc. contest coordinators encourage children to mail in a handwritten story about their pet postmarked by May 8, 2013. "It is just one way to bring awareness to National Pet Month," stated Karen Lemieux, Marketing Representative. "We are excited to read all about the fun kids have with their pets."

All of the "editors" names will be placed in a jar and randomly drawn from a few of the residents at Metacare Inc. The ten editors whose names are chosen will have an opportunity to get up and close to Jellybean - a housebroken miniature horse on Thursday, May 16th from 4:00pm-5:00pm. The owner of Jellybean, Heidi Mehl, will be bringing her horse to this local assisted living facility for the residents and children to love on her! Heidi will also be providing a story of her own...a book that she wrote about Jellybean (which is available for purchase). And, with the help of our chosen editors, they will have a chance to read the story, along with Heidi, to the residents. The children's pet stories may also be featured by National Pet Month organization.

A Letter from Jellybean

Hi, my name is Jellybean. I am a house broken miniature horse. I have my own minivan and I love to go on field trips. I visit the elderly at nursing homes, children at birthday parties and students at schools. I even make surprise visits to people at their employment. On time I got to go to a local salon in Birmingham for a visit and I even got to ride the elevator! I am completely housebroken and I wear little tennis shoes so I won't slip on your floors! I am looking forward to visiting the residents and the young kids at Metacare Inc. on May 9th in celebration of National Pet Month...cause you know, I am a pet too! If you are interested in hiring me, please call my owner Heidi and she will set it up for us! Call (248) 672-2226, visit my website at www.minijellybean.com or e-mail me at heidi@jellybean.com. I hope to hear from you soon!

About National Pet Month

National Pet Month is a celebration of the benefits that pets bring to people's lives - and vice versa. It is observed annually in the United States in May and during the month of April in the United Kingdom. National Pet Month helps create awareness of the benefits of companion animals and the need to look after them responsibly. Of course, responsible pet ownership means good preventive healthcare, grooming and feeding – and it means fun! National Pet Month’s aims are to:

- Promote the benefits of pet ownership

- Support pet adoption

- Make people aware of the benefits of pets for people and people for pets

- Increase public awareness of services available from professionals who work with animals

- Raise awareness of the role, value and contribution to society of working companion animals

To be included in the contest, all stories must be handwritten and postmarked by May 8th to Metacare Inc., 423 W. Dryden Road, Metamora, MI 48455 (attn: Pet Story Contest). One story per child. Please include the child's name, age and a phone number and/or email address. The ten chosen editors will be contacted by Monday, May 13th. Happy writing!
