From: Mnuchin Gallery

El Anatsui, TKT, 2014, found aluminum and copper wire, dimensions variable; as displayed: 84 x 131 inches (213.4 x 332.7 cm)

The contemporary Ghanaian artist El Anatsui is renowned for his large-scale assemblages, which cast everyday, recycled materials in a dazzling new light. Bridging the modalities of Western and African art, as well as the mediums of painting and sculpture, his works investigate the concepts of tradition and metamorphosis. In TKT (2014), for example, found crimson and cadmium yellow bottle caps are flattened, reshaped, and sewn together with copper wire. The vibrantly colored metallic materials are punctuated by cut-outs, drapes, and folds that evoke an undulating, organic movement. As Anatsui explains, “they mutate effectively because we don’t tie them too tightly; there is always the freedom for each piece to adjust itself.”1
