Mulvane Art Museum Appoints Academic Curator

After conducting a national search, the Mulvane Art Museum is pleased to announce the appointment of Academic Curator Sara Stepp. The Academic Curator post is a one-year NEH grant-funded position, which will work with the Mulvane Art Museum and academic faculty and staff across the Washburn University campus to generate cross-disciplinary programs.

Stepp is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Kansas, specializing in art since 1960. Her research focuses on memory, history, and cultural interchange in contemporary art. Her dissertation examines the ways that contemporary Chinese-American artist Hung Liu’s work engages overlapping issues relating to time, place, and identity.?

Stepp has a B.A. in Art History and Curatorial Studies from Brigham Young University (2014) and an M.A. in History of Art from the University of Kansas (2017). She’s worked on a number of curatorial projects at peer institutions in the region, such as the Spencer Museum of Art, the H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute, the Lawrence Arts Center, and the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery.

In addition to her curatorial work, Stepp has received many academic fellowships and awards, including the Andrew W. Mellon Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Curriculum Fellowship at the University of Kansas. Through this fellowship, she gained experience creating and implementing arts-related coursework centered on issues related to social justice, marginalized identities, and intersectionality.
