28th Annual Chamber Music Festival

Welcome to the 28th season of Music in the Vineyards festival! We are very excited to return to ‘normal’ this summer with exhilarating concerts in stunning winery settings, an experience only found in the Napa Valley.

The festival showcases nearly 40 world-class artists-in-residence from the U.S., Europe and Canada performing new and classic chamber music repertoire in stunning winery settings. Each concert is hosted by a different Napa Valley winery in barrel rooms, caves and event spaces.  With complimentary wine tastings at each intermission and breathtaking views of the wine valley, this unique combination of wine country ambiance and world class talent allows artists and audiences alike to experience chamber music in an intimate setting as it was intended to be performed.

We will have a presentation by The Grand Tour about our long awaited tour to Vienna and Prague, scheduled for May 1 - 11 2023. If you would like to find out more about this unique trip led by Michael and Daria Adams, just come along.  If you are not able to attend but would like more information please email us.

Beethoven’s youthful, virtuosic string trio foreshadows the brilliance that distinguishes his later string quartets. Anna Clyne drew inspiration (and quotes!) from those Beethoven quartets in Breathing Statues.

12:30pm: Lecture Demonstration - Aaron Copland: The Sound of America
Renowned pianist John Novacek presents a piano demonstration and enlightening discussion of the music of Aaron Copland who is known as “The Dean of American Composers”. Winner of both a Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award, Copland incorporated popular American forms such as jazz and folk into his compositions for symphony orchestra, film and ballet.

You are welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine before John’s presentation. Afterward, linger on the terrace surrounded by vineyards for wine and light appetizers along with musical conversation.

This program is inspired by folk and popular music: Paul Schoenfield’s whimsical Café Music was sparked by his turn as house pianist at a Minneapolis steakhouse; John Novacek pays homage to Ragtime,and Bartók and Dvorak mined the folk music of their home lands to create sublime works of art

Rachmaninoff and Brahms anchor this program that takes a deep dive into the music of five composers who were all writing in the final years of the Romantic Period.

Following the concert, mingle with our musicians and get acquainted while enjoying Silverado wines, appetizers and a magnificent sunset over the vineyards. Space is limited so book early!

The first of Mozart’s six quartets dedicated to “Papa” Haydn opens a program that highlights two remarkable women who were both distinguished performers and composers. The finale is the Grande Sestetto, a brilliant arrangement of Mozart’s wonderful Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola.

2:00pm: High School Solo Competition Final Round
Now in its ninth year, MITV’s Solo Instrumental Competition for high school musicians who are residents of California, awards cash prizes of $1000, $750 and $500 to three outstanding instrumentalists selected by competitive audition.  Due to the pandemic the competition will be online this year and you are invited to watch the final round on our website.  Please join us in supporting these exceptional young musicians.

5:30pm: 2022 Esterhazy Concert & Dinner
Join us for this one-of-a-kind evening in the picturesque surroundings of Hudson Ranch, where you will enjoy an evening of chamber music and fine dining in an intimate setting.  The Maxwell Quartet, regarded as one of Britain’s finest, share universally-loved music they are famous for, based on Scottish folk songs, in a lively and fun performance.

After the concert, patrons will enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres overlooking the succulent garden and stunning landscape, followed by a seated al fresco dinner prepared by Nash Cognetti of Tre Posti accompanied by Hudson Ranch wines.

Space is limited to 50 guests, so interested patrons are urged to reserve their spaces soon.

Net proceeds from this Esterhazy Concert benefit the Gail and Harry Adams Resident Musicians’ Fund.

Both the concert and dinner take place outdoors and all current safety protocols for Covid-19 will be in place to guarantee the comfort and safety of our patrons.

Tickets: $500 per person, of which $300 is tax deductible.
*MITV’s Esterhazy Series is named after Prince Esterhazy, patron to the "father" of the string quartet, Franz Joseph Haydn.

A special community performance.
Three classic silent films, with original music by Stephen Prutsman performed by festival musicians, recreate the cinema experience of 100 years ago, before recorded sound was integrated into film making in the 1920's.  The main attraction is a Buster Keaton classic, Sherlock Jr. from 1924. A Trip to the Moon (1902) is considered the earliest science fiction flick, while The Cameraman's Revenge (1912) is one of the first-ever animated films.
