The first 100 people who adopt or foster a medium-to-large dog from Pima Animal Care Center can get a $100 credit at PACC’s on-campus Central Pet store. The offer comes as PACC faces a critical capacity crisis after taking in 131 dogs and 46 cats over the weekend.

The animals that came into the shelter this weekend joined more than 500 pets already at PACC, bringing the shelter’s census to 553 dogs and 95 cats. The crisis is specific to medium-to-large dogs, which make up the majority of the dogs currently available for adoption.

Monica Dangler, Director of Animal Services, said that there are 214 more dogs in the shelter today than on the same date in 2019.

“We are keeping dogs in offices, lobbies, and meeting rooms and are out of space for incoming dogs,” said Dangler. “We need to find placement for at least 100 dogs immediately.”

In order to find homes for these dogs, PACC is offering incentives for the first 100 large dogs to leave the shelter via adoption, foster, or rescue this week. Anyone who adopts or fosters a dog that weighs more than 40 pounds will receive a $100 credit to the on-campus Central Pet store, which offers a variety of pet supplies including food, collars and leashes, toys, and more. In addition, any rescue partner that pulls a dog 40 pounds or larger will receive a $100 donation per dog. These incentives are thanks to a generous donation from the Click Family Foundation and will be valid either until 100 large dogs have found homes or through the end of the day Friday.

PACC is open from noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. To see all available pets and services, please go to www.pima.gov/animalcare.
