Performance - Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris

Arts and Entertainment

September 26, 2012

From: MetroStage
Directed by Serge Seiden Choreographed by Matt Gardiner

Jacques Brel's music is as timeless and universal as it was when it was introduced to English-speaking audiences in 968 at the Village Gate. Themes of love and loss, youthful hopes and dreams, old age and death. A remarkable blend of ballads and tangos, boleros, rock and classics all done with poetry and passion, transcending time, place and language. Featuring Natascia Diaz, from the acclaimed 2006 off-Broadway production.

In My Opinion: I discovered Brel in the i98o's when it was performed at d.c. space, a tiny venue at 7th and E St. NW (now a Starbucks!). I have wanted to produce it ever since. It is music with such humanity, addressing the range of human experience with such a wealth of emotion and beauty and ultimately hope. It is music for all ages for all times. Introduced in 1968 it resonated with audiences during the Vietnam War era. It is just as relevant today.
