Pima Animal Care Center has seen more than 60 puppies come into the shelter over the last week and needs adopters to make room for incoming adult dogs and puppies alike.

More than a thousand dogs, including puppies, have come into the facility since the beginning of July. PACC currently is caring for 517 dogs, which is well above critical capacity, at the shelter due to seeing a summer slowdown in adoptions and foster outcomes. Many of these dogs are puppies, who require the same, if not more resources, to get placed into homes.

“Adopting a puppy from a shelter is a win/win/win situation,” said Monica Dangler, PACC’s Director of Animal Services. “The puppies are safe in a new loving home, adopters save hundreds of dollars on vaccinations, sterilization, and microchipping, and the shelter has the resources to dedicate to those pets that truly need help.”

PACC released a public euthanasia list for the first time in several years last December. Since publishing the list, just three dogs from the list have been euthanized. However, shelter leadership is concerned that if summer trends continue, more pets may face euthanasia.

“We are so thankful for the community support we receive,” said Dangler. “Without fosters, adopters, and community members helping reunite happy, healthy stray pets, we would not be a lifesaving shelter.”

This weekend only (Aug. 4-6), PACC is waiving adoption fees for puppies and kittens, making all pets free to adopt. The shelter has dozens of puppies currently available for adoption. All pets being adopted have age-appropriate vaccines, are sterilized prior to adoption, and are microchipped.

PACC is located at 4000 N. Silverbell Road and is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from noon to 7 p.m., on Wednesday from 1:30 – 7 p.m., and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pets come microchipped, spayed or neutered, and with age-appropriate vaccinations. Adult dogs require a $20 licensing fee. To learn more about available PACC pets and services, please go to www.pima.gov/animalcare.
