Provincetown, MA – The Town of Provincetown is excited to announce that the Office of Governor Baker has approved the $750,000 Land, Water, Conservation Fund grant application for Cannery Wharf Park development at 387 Commercial Street. Even though the town now has Massachusetts approval, the grant application still awaits final approval from the Federal Parks Services before becoming final, as LWCF is a federally funded grant program.  

The LWCF is administered by Massachusetts Department of Conservation Services on behalf of the National Park Service (NPS), an agency of the Department of the Interior. The LWCF program provides grants to states and local governments and federally recognized Indian tribes for the acquisition and development of public outdoor recreation areas and facilities. The program is intended to create and maintain a nationwide legacy of high-quality recreation areas and facilities, and to stimulate non-federal investments in the protection and maintenance of recreation resources across the United States. To be eligible for grants, every state must prepare and regularly update a statewide recreation plan (sometimes called a SCORP). The Cannery Wharf Park project objectives are priorities as listed in the goal section of the statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan such as addressing climate change and creating more accessible water access.  

If approved by the Federal Parks Service, which can take many more months, the grant will be a reimbursable in the amount of $750,000. The total amount of the project cost of $1,800,000, which has been approved at town meeting, will still need to be funded at the May 10^th election in order for the town to be awarded this grant. Provincetown must show the National Parks Service that the project is fully funded, in the event that it is the town will be reimbursed with Federal Grant to offset the total project cost of $1,800,000 to $1,050,000.
