Rep. Correa Calls for Action in Investigation of killings of Fathers Javier Campos and Joaquín Mora
Washington, D.C. — Today Rep. Lou Correa (CA-46) co-led a letter alongside Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (CA-18) calling for President Biden to take action in the investigation of the killings of two Jesuit priests, Fathers Javier Campos and Joaquín Mora, in Chihuahua, Mexico.
“The loss of Fathers Javier Campos and Joaquín Mora are outrageous, not only to the faith community in Mexico but also in my own district where many Mexican Americans of Catholic faith have mourned the loss. Deaths such as this are not only heartbreaking but are also going unrecognized. I have joined Congresswoman Eshoo in leading our House colleagues to urge the Biden Administration to work more closely with the Mexican government and civil society groups to improve law enforcement's ability to investigate and strengthen the independence of prosecutors and judges in Mexico.
The perpetrators of these crimes need to be held accountable for their actions. I’m committed to the ongoing efforts to restore peace and strengthen human rights in Mexico, and to combat the rampant violence for our neighbor to the South.”
Background: On June 20th, two Mexican priests were murdered while providing safety to Pedro Palma a local tour guide fleeing gang violence. Priests are often the target of gang violence due to their position as mediators and protectors for people seeking safety. We can respect the memory of Fathers Campos and Mora and all the victims of this senseless violence by stepping up our efforts to combat the epidemic of violence in Mexico.
