Information About Breast Pump Coverage for WIC Participants
WIC Breast Pump Coverage:
In response to Informational Letter 2403-MC-FFS, the State WIC Office will be submitting updates to WIC policy regarding issuance of breast pumps. As soon as the policy revision is approved, it will be shared with all local WIC agencies.
Moving forward, WIC should be the primary provider of hospital-grade, personal electric, and manual breast pumps for WIC clients. When breastfeeding women express a need or desire for a breast pump, WIC agencies have been instructed to issue breast pumps as they would have prior to when the MCOs started providing pumps as a value-added benefit and according to the current WIC Issuing Breastfeeding Equipment policy.
Responding to Questions from WIC Participants:
WIC participants that have questions about obtaining breast pumps through Medicaid should be informed that WIC is now covering breast pumps for WIC participants. It would be helpful to remind these participants that obtaining a breast pump through WIC will also be much faster and easier than accessing through Medicaid, as they won't have to obtain a prescription from their provider or find a Medicaid-approved DME that issues breast pumps.
