5:00 PM: Opening Night Film: Hines by Mike Leech

Jesse Hines has been ripping the Outer Banks waves for decades. As a professional surfer, it hasn’t been a perfect life. Jesse got into a serious car wreck on the Bonner Bridge when he was 14, almost ending his surfing career. After partying, and drinking throughout his teenage life, Jesse and a few friends realized that there’s more to life. After accepting Jesus into their lives, Jesse met his wife, Whitney. After they got married, and Jesse’s surfing career was over, they opened the ‘Surfin Spoon’. Jesse and Whitney have two beautiful boys: David Bear and John Wilder. This film tells the amazing story of Jesse’s life, with plenty of jaw-dropping, east coast shredding.

4:00 PM: BIG vs SMALL

When your passion and your greatest fear collide, the result can either be epic or catastrophic. For diminutive Portuguese surfer Joana Andrade, the rush of challenging the massive waves of Nazare is only outweighed by her intense fear of drowning. Tracking her  journey from the thunderous surf of her nation’s coast to the placid environs of Finnish filmmaker Minna Dufton’s home, this film captures Andrade’s personal quest for the 100 foot wave and the mental and physical preparation it takes to make that terrifying drop.

6:30 PM: A Celebration of the life of Cecil Lear

The ESA’s co-founder and dear friend Cecil Lear peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 16 with his beloved family by his side. A pioneer and advocate for East Coast surfers, Cecil will be greatly missed by the worldwide surfing community. Cecil also co-founded the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame. The Eastern Surfing Association invites you to join us for this celebration of Cecil’s life. Food and beverages will be provided by Surfalorus and a short film about Cecil’s life will screen at 7:30pm. No ticket required.

4:00 PM: Waterman

It’s hard to argue that any single person had more of an effect on the proliferation of surfing worldwide than Duke Kahanamoku. First coming to international fame as an Olympic Champion swimmer, Duke spread the ocean culture and aloha of his native Hawaii to every foreign shore he traveled to. He also taught the craft of surfboard building to his new friends and seeded surf culture all over the world. An honorable, kind, hardworking man, Duke’s life was beset with challenges and struggles but throughout it all, he represented his island home with pride and dignity. This epic look at his life and the legacy of Hawaiian spirit he spread across the world is truly inspirational.

7:00 PM: Sweet Adventure

Zaffa filmmaker Peter Hamblin, known for his surf doc series The Ripple Effect, and his feature on World Champ Carissa Moore, Riss, is back with a stylish, entertaining travel pic. Sweet Adventure follows Maui ripper Albee Layer and his partner, Nora Vasconcellos, as they launch a surgical strike to El Salvador in search of some Central American bombs with their pal, Matt Meola. This whimsical feature, wonderfully narrated by action sports legend Salema Masekela, features a handful of cameos from surf culture legends as well as slick photography, perfectly curated music and well-constructed edits. If you’ve never experienced the amazing lineups and waves of El Sal, this is a primer on how to make it happen.
