Houston Center for Contemporary Craft is pleased to announce metalsmith and educator, Sandie Zilker , as its 2014 Texas Master. Zilker is the fifth artist to be featured in the Texas Masters Series. The Houston native joins the roster of former Texas Masters Harlan Butt, Cindy Hickok, Rachelle Thiewes, and Piero Fenci recognized for their roles as career artists in Texas who have made a significant impact on the field of craft.
As evidenced by her jewelry, as well as her own sartorial sensibility, Zilker is no stranger to experimentation in color, texture, pattern, and form. Her dynamic presentation of color and composition demonstrates her persuasive ability to influence individual perception. Using the body as a frame of reference, each of her pieces is packed with personality, increasing one's sensory awareness and creating a unique relationship between wearer and object. In the summer of 2014, HCCC will feature Zilker's work in a solo exhibition, marking her 40th year of teaching at the Museum of Fine Arts' Glassell School of Art, where she is head of the Jewelry and Enamel and Three Dimensional Design departments.
