June 27, 2014
June 21 is the day of Solstice, which is the longest day of the year. At The Buckingham senior living community residents were encouraged to wear purple to honor the strength, passion and endurance of those living with Alzheimer's and to acknowledge those who are taking special care of someone suffering from the disease. Additionally, residents were challenged to participate in an activity or several activities from sun up to sun down. The day wrapped up with a Summer Solstice party at the pool. With a minimum donation of $20 to the Alzheimer's Association, residents were invited to enjoy entertainment and dessert by the pool.
"On the longest day, teams around the world come together to honor those living with Alzheimer's with a special activity," said Cathy Lightfoot, director of sales and marketing at The Buckingham. "The Summer Solstice party was a fabulous event and a great way to honor those living with and caring for those with Alzheimer's while also raising money for the cause. It was a meaningful day for all who participated."
According to the Alzheimer's Association, more than five million Americans are living with the disease, and every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's. Because of these staggering figures, The Buckingham holds year round fundraisers to support the Alzheimer's Association work towards a cure.
