Job Description

NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel powered automatic and related heavy equipment, and in the use of acetylene and electric arc-welding equipment and the fabrication and repairs of iron and steel equipment.  Assignments are received by written or verbal order.  Employees work under general supervision, using independent judgment as to method of repair.  In addition to maintenance work this work involves the application of trade skills to a wide variety of welding, brazing, bench, and anvil work on ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Superiors check work during its progress and give final inspection and the completion of jobs.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 General

-Performs repair work on different types of gas- and diesel-powered equipment consisting of light and medium trucks, cars, tractors, backhoes, sweepers, graders, front-end loaders, and various tools and equipment.

-Inspects adjusts and replaces as necessary any related parts such as: alternators, clutches, brakes, injectors, springs, hoses batteries, bulbs, radiators, bearings, belts, fluids, transmissions, rear ends, ignitions, and other miscellaneous and replaceable parts, as needed or required.

-Performs road call and on-site service to inoperative equipment and/or vehicles.

-Does welding with acetylene and electric arc equipment, preheats and cleans metal, cuts and fits materials for welding on trucks, tractors, and other equipment.

-Fashions, hardens, and tempers iron and steel for parts for trucks, automobiles, tractors, and other vehicles and equipment.

-Straightens chassis, bumpers, bodies, hard faces or replaces, shovel teeth, grader blades and other equipment.

-Occasionally picks up and delivers supplies and materials.

-Performs related work as required.

 Minimum Qualifications And Educational Requirements

 Training and experience equivalent to: 

-High School Diploma or equivalent

-Experience and training in auto mechanics and experience in the repair of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment, or have equivalent combination of training and experience and/or being designated as an ASC Certified Mechanic.

-Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair of heavy duty trucks, heavy equipment, light duty trucks and cars.

-Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical repair to automotive and diesel equipment.

-Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the service mechanic trade.

-Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.

-Knowledge of the properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their capacities for bending, hardening, tempering, and otherwise changing in quality and appearance.

-Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, to read sketches, diagrams, and models.

-Sufficient physical strength to permit the lifting and moving of heavy objects.

-Must have in his/her personal possession necessary tools to be able to satisfactorily perform the duties and jobs of the General Service Mechanic.

-Ability to diagnose and correct mechanical problems as pertaining to gasoline and diesel powered cars, light duty trucks, heavy duty trucks, heavy equipment, tools and various other equipment.

-Ability to instruct, lay out, check and on completion, inspect the work of sub-ordinates.

-Ability to completely and correctly fill out shop work orders and to perform other administrative duties.

-Valid Alabama driver’s license with the ability to be insured by the city’s liability insurance carrier.
